Conifers for small gardens
Evergreen and reliable, conifers give your garden a lovely look all year round. Conifers are elegant trees with impressive foliage that you can prune into a sculptural shape. Conifers provide you with beautiful cones and sometimes autumn colours, too. Whether you have a large garden or a small garden patio, conifers always fit. Trowbridge Garden Centre offers several species that are compact enough to fit into a smaller garden. We show you our five favourite small conifers from the range available in our garden centre.
Conifers come in a large group of main trees and some shrubs. Conifers give your garden year-round interest and are loved for their distinct shapes and colours. Most conifers are evergreen, like firs, cypresses, redwoods, junipers and spruces. Trowbridge offers a wide range of conifers at the outdoor plant area. Choose a conifer with the shape and colour you like. We stock different types of conifers, from small conifers and dwarf conifers to very tall and wide conifers. Conifers are very easy to grow and are low maintenance. Plant them in the right place and they will happily thrive for years with little to barely any care.
Small garden conifers
Add an evergreen conifer to your garden and give your outside a lovely look all year round. Trowbridge offers a fine selection of small garden conifers. Here is our top five small conifers:
Korean fir (Abies koreana): Startling steel-blue needles make this fir stand out: it's a low, wide-spreading tree, and the cones are purplish blue too. Grows, slowly, to about 3m.
Cryptomeria japonica: Very handsome upright tree with sweeping blue-green branches ('Elegans Aurea' is yellow-green) which flush bronze in late autumn. Grows between five and 10m tall depending on the variety.
Picea pungens 'Globosa': Low-growing spruce that gradually forms a spreading dome of sharp, stiff grey-green needles. The height and spread are just one metre.
Columnar yew (Taxus baccata 'Standishii'): Evergreen yews are great in small gardens as they're easily clipped into shape. 'Standishii' does it all by itself, forming a golden column 1m tall and just 18cm wide.
Maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba): The conifer that doesn't look like a conifer: ginkgos are airy trees with delicate-looking fan-shaped leaves which turn butter-yellow before falling in autumn. Reaches 5-10m tall.

If you don’t have much space, but you want to give your garden or balcony year-round interest, dwarf conifers are an excellent idea. Here is why we love dwarf conifers:
- They offer beautiful colour
- They offer a year-round structure
- They are mostly maintenance-free
- They offer shelter to garden birds
A small group of dwarf conifers we have available at our garden centre, are:
- Norway spruce (Picea abies species) has a pyramidal shape and shiny dark-green foliage.
- Creeping Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis species) is a conifer and a ground cover in one. Perfect for rock gardens and seashores.
- Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) needs full sun and acidic soil to thrive. The beautiful pumpkin orange-brown colour steals the show in autumn.
