Container fruit

You too can grow fruit – even if you don't have a garden. Almost all fruit trees and bushes can be grown in containers, and more exotic fruits, like peaches and nectarines, do better in a pot as they can be protected more easily. And what about vertical gardening. You only need a wall, some good fruit trees and a sunny spot. This Summer you can enjoy sweet blueberries, fruity strawberries or fresh apples. Find your container fruit at Trowbridge Garden Centre in Trowbridge-Wiltshire and discover the many options you can create with fruit in containers and vertical gardening.

Tips for growing fruit in pots

At Trowbridge Garden Centre, we understand that not everyone has the privilege to own a hectare garden to plant endless long borders, a pond and some trees for the shade. For every small balcony or average garden, we have a solution. You don't need huge space for growing fruit trees. Fruit trees can grow from containers as well. Here are our top tips for growing fruit in pots:

  • Which container? Choose terracotta or plastic planters about 7cm larger than the plant's rootball from the range available in our garden centre. Re-pot into larger containers each year. Go for a container that is at least 20% bigger than the old pot. This way, the plant gets enough space to grow big and beautiful. Eventually, you will enjoy sweet apples, juicy pears or sour lemons from your own harvest.
  • Which compost? Soil-based composts are available in our garden centre and are ideal for fruit as they hold on to nutrients for longer. Don't use ordinary garden soil as it doesn't drain well enough. Fruit trees need perfect soil. Otherwise, they will only flower and don't produce fruits.
  • Which stake? Most container-grown trees need staking. Sturdy tree stakes and bamboo canes are available in our garden centre: sink to the bottom of the pot and tie in loosely. This way, the fruit tree will find its way up to pop out some lovely fruits.
  • Which feed? We have special feeds for potted fruit, like citrus feed for lemon trees. Ask our staff in the garden centre, which feeds suits your container fruit. Some need soil full of nutrients. Others need medium nutrients in the ground to grow. In our garden centre, you will find all the feeds you need.
