Trailing Houseplants

Create an Urban Jungle with lots of various houseplants. Use big houseplants, small houseplants, cacti, succulents and trailing houseplants. Trailing houseplants are hanging houseplants that have long, trailing stems. You can grow them in pots hanging on the ceiling or place them on a shelf, enabling their branches to cascade down for a wow-effect—Trowbridge Garden Centre stocks different types of trailing houseplants. Read on or visit our garden centre to check them out.

How to grow trailing houseplants?

Trailing houseplants can add a dramatic effect to your room, as long as you choose one that will thrive in your conditions. Some tolerate high humidity. Others prefer dry air. Please make sure you check the plant label for the growing guidelines before your plant won’t survive it.

Best trailing plants for the bathroom

You can brighten up your bathroom with a trailing houseplant. Choose between hanging the pot on the ceiling or placing it on a shelf, on the windowsill or a sideboard. Here’s a list of available trailing houseplants that will thrive in the bathroom, suitable for warm, humid conditions:

  1. Golden pothos, Epipremnum aureum ‘Njoy’, is a twining vine with green-golden leaves that tolerates shade and is perfect for beginners, as it copes with neglect. This plant needs water when the compost surface is dry, which you can check by sticking the tip of your fingers into the soil. When the topsoil layer feels dry, it’s time to water! You can also give this plant a quick shower to clean its leaves and simulate its natural habitat. Let drain and air dry naturally.
  2. Green heartleaf Philodendron, Philodendron scandens, produces heart-shaped dark green leaves and is ideal as a twining plant. This Philodendron cultivar needs little care and does well in low-lightning conditions, like the bathroom. Create an indoor jungle with this tropical trailing plant.
  3. Red herringbone plant, Maranta leuconeura var. erythroneura, is a remarkable plant with attractive foliage. The leaves are patterned with red stripes. A fun fact about this plant is that it closes its leaves at night as if in prayer. That’s why it’s also known as the prayer plant. It needs moderate light but not too bright, or its leaves will fade—water when the compost surface is dry.

Best trailing plants for a bright spot

Bright spots, like a windowsill, are warm, light locations. It would help if you chose plants that adore bright light. Please notice a difference between the midday sun and morning or afternoon direct sunlight. Most plants can’t handle midday sun, so keep this in mind when choosing the right trailing plant.

  1. String of Pearls, Senecio rowleyanus, is a great plant that makes a beautiful statement. This plant needs some experience, so we recommend choosing another plant if you’re a beginner. The strings are covered with cute green pearls. The plant doesn’t like water, and it prefers to soak water from the roots. Fill a saucer with water and let it soak for minutes.
  2. Chain cactus or Rhipsalis paradoxa ‘Minor’ is a fabulous plant that produces leathery strings with small white flowers in spring if given cooler temperatures over winter. This plant likes a weekly watering in spring and summer and loves a misting. Suitable for more experienced growers.
  3. Coral cactus, Rhipsalis cereuscula, grows long, slender stems that look like coral. This plant is sometimes called the mistletoe plant because of its white bell-shaped flowers in spring, followed by spherical, white fruits. Where would you like to hang this fantastic plant? It tolerates bright light conditions, needs regular water, and must be completely dried out between two waterings in winter.
