Pond ecosystems

On this page, you are about to find out about pond ecosystems. Do you have a pond in your garden? That's fantastic. Build a pond in your garden and you'll find within hours it's teeming with life. There's nothing so attractive to wildlife as water, and it pulls in fascinating creatures from dragonflies to pond skaters, frogs and toads. Do you want to attract wildlife to your garden? Visit Trowbridge to find out what you need to build a pond. If you already have a pond, here's how you make your pond more attractive to wildlife, like frogs and toads.

A thriving wildlife pond develops a varied, vibrant ecosystem. Follow our tips for giving your pond everything it needs to create a world of its own. Think of fish, birds, insects and reptiles like frogs and toads. If you create a fantastic pond with running water, this will prevent the pond water from turning green because of algae. Green algae and green deposits are caused by standing water that doesn't run. At Trowbridge, we have water pumps to keep the water running. Ask our staff for advice or contact us by calling 01225 763927 or send an email to [email protected].

Tips for pond ecosystems

  1. Plant different-shaped plants: frogs lay their eggs under flat-leaved water lilies, while dragonfly larvae crawl up spear-like irises to dry out. You'll find these and other wildlife-friendly plants in our garden centre. Our friendly staff will tell you everything about the best pond plants. Want to know which plants attract what animals? Visit us in Trowbridge-Wiltshire and find out everything about pond ecosystems at our pond section.
  2. Create a beach: access is very important for wildlife dropping in for a drink or a swim. So, make sure animals can access your pond easily. It doesn't have to be too easy, animals do like to be challenged. A shallow slope at one end, covered in pebbles (available in bags from our garden centre) let them crawl in and out easily.
  3. Pile up large stones or cobbles to create a perfectly cool, shady hidey-hole for frogs, toads and insects. Dead branches in the pond are quickly colonised by insects and dragonflies and birds use them as perches.
  4. Don't add fish as they'll eat frog eggs, toad spawn and larvae, reducing the range of life in your pond. You can add fish if you are fond of koi carp or goldfish. At our garden centre, you'll find fish to add to your pond. If you decide to not add fish to your pond, make sure you add enough plants for other wildlife to shelter and eat.
